Apricot Season

June 29, 2011

We’ve begun harvesting the apricots from our tree. (Actually three varieties planted in one hole and pruned a single tree. See April 17 post, Fruitful Promise). With low chill varieties, we can grow apricots two blocks from the ocean.

Lucy, our Brittany has been assisting in the harvest. The retriever segment of her genetic code directs her to bring errant apricots to the back door or into the house. She has a “soft mouth” which means she is inclined to carry an object in her mouth without clamping down, chewing, biting, or otherwise damaging the object.

Today, while I was at work, she retrieved five apricots without much damage, but did leave behind a little slobber. I can’t waste these jewels, so I washed them well, cut them in pieces and stewed them. Heat, you know, will take care of whatever she left on them. I did cook them a little longer than usual; sort of apricot sauce.

No sugar required. A delicious dessert tonight.
