In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen

The beet harvest begins in earnest as the tomatoes are ready to supplant them. I have friends from other continents who are especially fond of beets and eagerly receive them. This week I’ll pull out my beet recipe folder and add them to the weekly fare.

As I review the Beets photo album on my computer, I gather ideas. I’m lured by the Beet and Onion Jam Galette I made last year.

As the weather warms and the winter garden fades, I’ll begin this week to extract the crops whose time has passed. There is still plenty of veggies to share and I made this garden gift basket for a cousin here in San Diego.

There is a simple beauty in the spring onions. Extra points for the magenta color. Ditto Red Russian kale and red kohlrabi.

It was time to prepare the reserve of cranberry beans from last summer’s crop. I have a favorite salad that is a sumptuous delight and lets the beans be appreciated on their own merit.

Bright Lights chard continues well even as the weather warms. Regular harvests for my African friend keeps it going.

Sunday’s church entry bouquet for Mother’s Day: Hot Cocoa roses, larkspur, catmint and lavender.
