In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen

In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen

The incursion of either a raccoon or opossum prompted the harvest of about eight pounds of Dorsett Golden apples this weekend. We found the evidence. Generally, I prefer the apples to turn more “golden” but I’m not willing to share the small crop. A few weeks ago we made applesauce from another five pounds of more marginal early drops.

As I review my digital apple photo album, I’m thinking of an apple gallete and a favorite Moosewood bean entree that includes chopped apples might be ahead this week.

I’m not quite sure how we managed our New England apple crops of 50-70 bushels from our two full-sized trees. Admittedly, we were younger and had more energy. Babies in bed, we’d stay up until midnight making applesauce with friends using the Squeezo-Strainer. I invited a different friend each evening and we split the take. Apple season was grueling but worth it.

The apricot tree is bare and now only a couple dozen linger in the fridge. We pull out a half dozen each day to eat fresh. Last week with a crush of ones to process, I made a quart each of apricot puree and applesauce. Combined in that proportion makes a sumptuous fruit dessert.

Apricot smoothie with a dash of almond flavoring lingers in my seasonal memories.

We pick about this many strawberries or a few more every day. The smallest ones, though not grand in size are so very sweet and red through to the center. Here, last night’s fruit salad with apricots and bananas.

As I scrolled through my photos I came upon the lavender used in the apricot-lavender shrub. I’m enchanted by the fragrance and simple elegance. Every night a dab of lavender essential oil sends me into good sleep.
