In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
Jacaranda broccoli is a favorite from Territorial Seed Co. To understand my fascination with this variety read a previous post Jacaranda Broccoli. I harvested the last of four for the season. I’m hopeful for, but not guaranteed side shoots. Premium Crop broccoli, nearby will supply side shoots for several months.
Our plentiful rains have encouraged the Catalina spinach crop and I let the leaves grow in size to have more for steamed spinach and entrees. They still remain tender and cut in strips steam nicely. This reminds me I should be sowing a succession crop.
Lunch salads are from the garden with contributions of a friend’s Fuyu persimmon and purchased pistachios. Here, several kinds of lettuce, cauliflower, Purple Magic broccoli and snow peas delight.
Snow peas are a bit slow but just right for daily harvests and uses. I’ve grown this variety from saved seed since 2007 and it is well-adapted to my location. You can order my seed (and it’s not too late to plant in SoCal) from San Diego Seed Company.
On the agenda for today is getting the last of these lettuce seedlings in the ground before the anticipated rains of this week.
With all the remnants of the holidays sequestered for another year, I revel in the simplicity of the winter garden.
Check the What I’m Planting Now page as I continue to plant and succession sow in the cool season garden.
