In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
The seasons are changing in my garden. Snow peas and most of the broccoli have finished their run. The best season for lettuce has passed, though there is still some to harvest.
Other crops that take longer to size up like beets and carrots will be harvested in earnest soon. Scallions turn to spring onions and the sweet peas continue to delight. Potatoes fill the space where the cauliflower grew. Regrettably, I did not get dill, chard and more lettuce planted in early February. Next year.
Broccoli planted in September had a second life growing a new plant from the base or new substantial side branches. I’ve often wondered Is Broccoli a Perennial? from experience other years.
I counted eleven artichokes on our nearly five foot high plant. We had the first two last week.
We finished the last of the tangerines recently but still have some Navel oranges for eating and juice.
The Bountiful Blue blueberries are just beginning and we gather enough for cereal and fruit salads most days.
Ditto with strawberries. They seem to know it is spring.
