In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
The Seascape strawberry plants continue to yield a few strawberries every couple of days. The day neutral plants are reliable producers spring through the fall . There likely won’t be many more but we relish each one.
The peppers continue to ripen even as the days shorten. Soon I’ll decide the time has come to remove them plant and beet seeds which should have been done a month ago. Sometimes small garden timing goes awry.
I selectively harvest a few leaves of lettuce and arugula for salads. I’ve direct seeded more Rosaine (darker leaf) and need to continue starting the various lettuces I so enjoy.
Russian Beet Borscht from the original Moosewood Cookbook was on the menu last week. I had carefully prepared and stored in the fridge some of the beets and purple carrots harvested last May. It was time to use them. I’ve not used purple carrots in my borscht before but they added nicely to the color of the soup.
These garden gifts came my way recently. My neighbor has a generous crop of persimmons this year and more than she can use. I put the ripest ones on plain Greek yogurt or just eat with a spoon. Tomorrow, half of one will go in a breakfast smoothie.
After an inch of rain yesterday, I hastily gathered a bouquet of Mexican marigolds aflame in my street side garden for the church entry bouquet.
Check the What I’m Planting Now page as I continue to plant the cool season garden.
