In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
‘Tis the season for garden lettuce. I delight in composing and consuming a winter garden salad most days at lunch. My grandmother was a creative Depression days cook using what was at hand. She continues to inspire me.
Though only the lettuce is from my garden, the Fuyu persimmon and pomegranates were garden gifts from friends.
I have 60 lettuce plants (three varieities) growing well in small cells.. I’ll share some with gardening friends when they’re ready to transplant in about two weeks.
Things to come. Satsuma tangerines near harvest. Later today I’ll harvest the first head of Premium Crop broccoli. Seeds were sown August 30 and starts transplanted October 7. A gorgeous head of broccoli two months after settling into the garden.
Two of my December garden delights from last week: Seascape strawberry and Ambridge rose.
With the seasonal shift, bouquets are spare but satisfying.
Check the What I’m Planting Now page as I continue to plant and succession sow in the cool season garden.
